Two Years Candidates seeking admission to M.Sc. (Materials Science) shall have studied Physics with Chemistry / Electronics / Instrumentation / Electronic Equipment Maintenance/Computer Science/Statistics as major/optional subject or minor/subsidiary in Undergraduate degree course. Those who have not studied Chemistry at degree level must have studied Chemistry at P.U.C. / Higher Secondary Level. Candidates who have passed three year B.Sc. degree examination of this University or any other University considered equivalent thereto, with these major/optional subjects at the degree level are eligible for admission to this programme provided they have obtained not less than 50% marks in these cognate subjects. However, for candidates belonging to SC/ST the minimum marks is 45%.
M.Phil As per University Regulation Two semesters of six months each Master’s degree with a minimum of 55% marks(50% for SC/ST candidates) in the related field.
Ph.D As per University Regulation Three/Four Years and maximum five/six years for full-time and part-time research respectively. Second class Master's degree (minimum of 55%) in the subject/allied subject.

As per the decision of Academic Council of Mangalore University (Univ. O.M. No. MU/ACC/CR.64/2004-05/A2 dt. 01.01.2005), the M.Sc. Materials Science graduates are eligible to teach Physics in undergraduate colleges.

 Facilities Available:

Some of the major equipments available in the department are: two High Vacuum Thin Film Coating Units with electron beam evaporation facility and thickness monitor, a Keithley system DMM, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (Shimadzu), Thermo Mechanical Analyser (Shimadzu), Thin Film Coating and Monitoring Units, UV-Visible-NIR Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu), Electrometers (Keithley), Metallurgical microscope with CCD Camera (Kocom), NQR Spectrophotometer, Bruker Powder X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Fungilab Viscometer , Muffle Furnace, Impedance Analyzer, Atomic Force Microscope(AFM)  etc

Thrust Areas of Research:
 
The department has adequate facilities to carry out research in the following areas:

 

a)  Shape memory alloys and actuators

b)  Thin films and Island thin films.

c)  Polymer blends and conducting polymers

d)  Metal and Semiconductor Nanoparticles

e)  Irradiation studies of polymers

f)  Irradiation studies on semiconductors and particulate films
