The Post-Graduate course in Social Work was started under the Mother Department of Sociology in 2003. Students of Social Work learn the knowledge, skills and values to engage in culturally competent practice with diverse populations and communities. The students learn to critically analyse personal, familial and environmental factors affecting practice settings and practice techniques, and to advocate for those who confront barriers to achieving their fullest potentials.

About the Department
The Post-Graduate course in Social Work was started under the Mother Department of Sociology in 2003. Since, then the department has been offering MSW course with four major specialisation such as Community Development, Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations and Criminology and Correctional Administration. From 2010-2011, Mangalore University has introduced Choice Based Credit System under which social work students can study an interdisciplinary subject on their choice. An intensive curriculum is designed to impart the theoretical knowledge and practical training for social work students. Besides, the department is offering Ph.D programme and consultancy service to stakeholders in Societies. The Department has offered consultancy services to the Government of Karnataka in skill gap analysis in Dakshina Kannada District.
