Course Details:

Marine Geology is an interdisciplinary and stimulating branch of Earth Science that deals with the origin, history and evolution of ocean basins, the oceanic mineral resources, marine sediments etc. Students of M. Sc. (Marine Geology) course will have an opportunity to learn during the first three semesters not only Marine Geology, but also core subjects of Geology – Geomorphology, Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, Palaeontology, Stratigraphy, Structural Geology, Economic Geology (Terrestrial and Marine Resources), Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology - Geophysics and Geodynamics, Oceanography (Geological, Physical, Chemical and Biological), Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology and Climatology, Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing, Computer Science and Geographic Information System (GIS). A dissertation / project work has to be carried out in the fourth semester.

The syllabus has been framed such that it would adequately prepare students for the UGC-CSIR national entrance test (NET) and the Geologists Examination conducted by the UPSC for jobs in Geological Survey of India (GSI); besides they would be eligible to apply for employment in Mines and Geology Departments of State Governments, Central Government departments such as Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD); research institutes like National Institute of Oceanography, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Indian Institute of Science and in private companies and multinational corporations. Excellent opportunities exist for M. Sc. students to pursue higher education leading to Ph. D. degree in various universities, R & D institutions and CSIR labs.

Many of our alumni have qualified in NET and are employed in universities, national institutes, state- and central-government departments such as GSI, ONGC and AMD, and also in overseas universities and labs. In addition, a large number of them are working in GIS-related and other multi-national companies.

The M. Sc. (Marine Geology) course is open to all science graduates of Mangalore University (or an equivalent degree of other universities) who have studied three science subjects or two science subjects with Geography at the undergraduate level or B. E. in any branch of engineering. They should have scored a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/Category-I candidates) aggregate marks including languages and Group III. A topper in M Sc, Marine Geology course will be awarded C. Rajasekhariah Memorial Cash Price.

The Department also offers Ph. D. program in the fields of Water Resources, Oceanography, Marine Optics, Marine / Estuarine Geochemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry Geochemistry, Environmental Magnetism, Sedimentology and Paleontology, Remote Sensing and GIS , Integrated Coastal Studies.

Admission to this program is based on an entrance test. The Department has well equipped laboratories like: Geochemistry / Environmental Magnetism, Remote Sensing and GIS. For more sophisticated analysis, Ph. D. Students go to other institutions and research laboratories. Further details are given in the table below:
