Course Details:

The M.Sc., and Ph.D., courses were established more than a decade ago at the Mangalore University. Today more than 120 students have their Post Graduate degrees in Geoinformatics from Mangalore University and are placed in various spatial industries, research institutes in India and abroad. Geoinformatics is a blend of science and spatial technology that is a synergy of cartography, remote sensing, photogrammetry, geographic information systems, and global positioning systems, numerical analysis etc. Geoinformatics is interdisciplinary in which can be effectively used to develop terrains, track pollution, model and explore and exploit minerals and water resources, aid in crime detection, simulations, and dispersal, develop 3-D models etc. It has long reach in Oceanography, Environmental Sciences, Human Settlements, Landuse/cover assessment and Space Sciences. Many areas benefit from the Geoinformatics, such as land use management and urban planning, biodiversity management, virtual globes, public health, wild-life monitoring, designing of zoo environments, military and combat planning, marine informatics, architecture, archeological reconstruction, telecommunications, maritime transport and aviation, tracking of oil spills and pollutants.

Mangalore University is a pioneer to start a Masters Course in Geoinformatics over a decade ago with the some financial and technical assistance of Indian Space Research Organization that even established a hi-tech Remote Sensing and GIS lab at Mangalore University. The M.Sc., course in Geoinformatics in Mangalore University follows the Choice Based Credit System and offers a Choice Paper in the third semester: Geoinformatics of Coastal Environments. The syllabus has been up-graded more than three times with a view on the development in the industry and research. Topics such as GIS, Remote Sensing, Numerical Analysis, Cartography, Geomorphology, Computer Applications, DBMS with a sprinkle of Geology, Geophysics, Water Resources, etc form a part of the curriculum. Exploration for Oil and Gas, Kimberlites-diamond bearing rocks and sedimentology are new additions in order to enlarge the competitive skills the students opportunities in the job market. The laboratories are furnished with software to process the data obtained from various sources like Remote sensing, Field Survey, Aerial Photographs GIS these include ESRI Products, MapInfo, ERDAS Imagine, etc., etc. Complimentary platforms are a part of the laboratories. The M.Sc., Geoinformatics course is of four semesters with the final fourth semester dedicated to on-hand experience in industries or research institutes with the choice being left to the students. This has promoted fine-tuning of skills in Geoinformatics of the students in GIS, LiDAR, Photogrammetry, Satellite Oceanography, Land use/cover analysis. Geoinformatics is an emerging field catering to Societal, Industry and Scientific needs of the country and has attained a unique position in global space. The Geoinformatics course reinforces the concept of creating not mere scientists but application scientists who are of direct use to society. Our students are exposed to invited talks from scientists from ISRO, Space Applications Center-Department of Space, Magnasoft Geospatial Innovations, CSRE-IIT, ESRI, Sky Group, Rolta, GROUPE SCE etc. RSMI, Paradigm IT Pvt ., Ltd., Kochi.

Our students have contributed skilled manpower to South America and East Africa. Currently, we have students placed in Dubai-Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other areas of the Gulf. Our students also have placements in Canada, USA on long and short assignments. Our students represent various states including Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarath, West Bengal, Chattisgarh, etc..

Other than research guides form the department, NATIONAL CENTER FOR ANTARTIC AND OCEAN RESEARCH, INDIAN NATIONAL CENTER FOR OCEAN INFORMATION SERVICES-MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY, SPACE APPLICATIONS CENTER-ISRO, INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SPICE RESEARCH-CALICUT are some of the top institutes recognized to carryout research leading to the Ph.D., degree in geoinformatics of the Mangalore University.

Project Work/Dissertation:

Students of the 4th Semester are encouraged to do their Project/Dissertation work either in the software application industry or in research institutes and they submit a dissertation on the work done.

Labs:

Our Labs are equipped with state-of-art software and hardware and has largely been financed by the ISRO that assisted in establishing an ISRO-SPONSORED GEOINFORMATICS LAB. Two other labs exist with equipment such as Hyperspectral Radiometers, Spectrophotometers, Mulitparameter Marine Hydrolab Data Sonde, Millipore Filtering Units, IKONOS images, IRS-IC/ID images, Stereoscopes Aerial Photographs, IRS-P4 Digital Data Products, Naval Hydrographic Charts, Topographic Sheets, Trinocular Microscopes, etc.

Four Semesters Candidates who have passed any bachelor degree examination of Mangalore university or any other examination considered as equivalent thereto with any three science subjects or two science subjects with geography at the undergraduate level or B.E., in any subject are eligible for the programme provided they have secured a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/Category-I candidates) marks in aggregate including languages and group III subjects.
Ph.D. As per University Regulation Full Time Min. 3 to max. 5 years and Part Time min 4 to max. 6 years. Second class Master’s degree (minimum 55%) in the subject/allied subject. In the case of SC/ST and the Category-I candidates the minimum marks required 50%.
